Shadow Ridge Defeats Mojave 28-14 Behind Opportunistic Defense and Strong Ground Game

Shadow Ridge defended its home field with a complete team performance Friday night, defeating Mojave 28-14 behind a balanced rushing attack and a defense that capitalized on key opportunities.

The Mustangs built a 14-7 halftime lead before extending their advantage in the second half. Mojave answered with a fourth-quarter touchdown to pull within one possession, but Shadow Ridge responded with a late rushing score to secure the victory. Timely defensive plays—including an interception returned for a touchdown and a drive-stalling sack deep in Mojave territory—proved to be the difference.

Key Performances

Sophomore Isaiah Jones (#16) led the Mustangs on the ground, opening the scoring with a 5-yard rushing touchdown before adding a 1-yard touchdown run with three minutes remaining to put the game out of reach.

Junior Xavion Cross (#4) delivered one of the game's biggest offensive plays midway through the third quarter. After taking a pitch from quarterback Isaiah Ruiz (#5), Cross made a defender miss on the edge and raced untouched into the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown.

Shadow Ridge's defense came through with several momentum-shifting plays. Senior Ula Cox (#3) turned a broken Mojave possession into points by intercepting an errant pass and returning it 40 yards for a touchdown.

The Mustangs also received a dominant defensive effort from Aaron Smith (#31) and Salvatore Verba (#76). The pair combined for a 15-yard sack that nearly resulted in a safety, forcing Mojave quarterback #4 to barely escape the end zone before being brought down at the 3-yard line.

For Mojave, quarterback #4 connected with #3 on a 65-yard touchdown pass in the first half and later added a 30-yard rushing touchdown to keep the Rattlers within striking distance.

Shadow Ridge opened the game with an impressive scoring drive, capped by Jones' 5-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point gave the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead.

Mojave answered with a quick strike as quarterback #4 found #3 for a 65-yard touchdown pass. The extra point tied the game at 7-7.

The turning point began with a bad snap on a Mojave possession. Shadow Ridge's defensive pressure forced quarterback #4 to recover the loose ball before escaping multiple tacklers. As he attempted to make a play downfield, Cox stepped in front of the pass and returned the interception 40 yards for a touchdown. The successful extra point restored the Mustangs' lead at 14-7 heading into halftime.

Shadow Ridge added to its advantage with 3:17 remaining in the third quarter. Ruiz pitched the ball to Cross, who slipped past a defender and sprinted untouched for a 25-yard touchdown. The extra point extended the lead to 21-7.

Later in the game, Smith and Verba delivered another defensive highlight, teaming up to drop Mojave's quarterback for a 15-yard loss. The sack pushed the Rattlers back to their own 3-yard line after the quarterback narrowly escaped being tackled in the end zone.

Mojave refused to go away, as quarterback #4 broke free for a 30-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point cut the deficit to 21-14 and gave the visitors new life.

Any hopes of a comeback were short-lived. With three minutes remaining, Jones powered across the goal line from one yard out for his second rushing touchdown of the night. The extra point capped the scoring and secured Shadow Ridge's 28-14 victory.

Turning Point

The game's defining sequence came late in the first half when Shadow Ridge turned defensive pressure into points. After a bad snap disrupted Mojave's offensive play, relentless pressure forced quarterback #4 into an off-balance throw that Ula Cox intercepted and returned 40 yards for a touchdown. Instead of Mojave gaining momentum, the Mustangs seized control and carried a 14-7 lead into halftime.

Shadow Ridge improved to 4-1 with the victory. The next opponents, dates, times, and locations for both teams were not available.

The Mustangs showcased a balanced effort on both sides of the ball, using explosive offensive plays and timely defense to earn another impressive win as the season continues.
